The Toyota HiLux range has become even more appealing to Aussie fans with the arrival of its new flagship variant, the all-terrain performance GR Sport which enters local showrooms priced from $73,990 plus on-road costs.

The result of extensive development, including by Australian styling design and engineering evaluation teams, the Toyota HiLux GR Sport takes the desirability and capability of Australia's favourite pick-up to new levels.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the new HiLux variant would deliver a new level of excitement to the HiLux range.

"This is far more than a HiLux that looks the part," Mr Hanley said. "The extensive suspension, powertrain and underbody modifications give our new HiLux GR Sport the sort of performance credentials, that, along with its renowned towing and off-road capability, will appeal to recreational enthusiasts. The first-ever HiLux GR Sport's enhanced capability and performance is a fantastic example of how our skilled engineers and designers can improve our excellent vehicles even further and we are extremely proud to have been involved in its development".

More than just a series of visual upgrades, the performance enhancements start with an increase in maximum outputs for the venerable 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, with a 10 per cent increase in power and torque to produce 165kW/550Nm.

The six-speed automatic transmission has also been recalibrated to optimise the GR Sport's increased engine outputs.

GR Sport gains the same track width increase as the HiLux Rogue, growing by 135mm at the front and 155mm at the rear, along with a 15mm increase in ride height, compared with the core HiLux range.

The GR Sport's suspension is augmented further with the fitment of special KYB monotube shock absorbers tuned specifically for the vehicle, as well as the removal of the rear stabiliser bar providing increased suspension travel.

The fitment of 265/65R17 Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tyres enhance the Toyota HiLux GR Sport's on-road stance and off-road performance even further, and are wrapped around unique gloss black 17-inch alloy wheels.

The suspension upgrades have not compromised on the HiLux's full 3,500kg braked towing capacity, that is supported by the standard fitment of a genuine towbar with towball and seven-pin trailer wiring harness.

To support the off-road capability of the new flagship HiLux, the GR Sport is fitted with a Dakar-inspired front skid plate, steel rock rails and a pair of red-painted rear recovery points, all developed locally by the TMCA conversions and accessory team.

The upgraded parts support a series of visual upgrades starting with a unique blacked-out front grille with 'TOYOTA' lettering and aerodynamically enhanced wide-track front bumper with a silver lower moulding.

New dark grey overfenders help house the increased wheel track, while black badging, door handles and exterior mirrors contribute to the GR Sport's dynamic look.

The four-wheel ventilated disc brakes are also painted in a stylish red finish with GR logos to communicate the model's performance intentions.

Upgrades continue inside the cabin with seats upholstered in a blend of leather-accented and perforated suede trim, with silver accents for the perforated suede and grey stitching. Red seatbelts provide sporty accents in line with the GR design theme.

The steering wheel features a leather-accented wrap with red centre mark, GR logo and paddle shifters, with a unique visual treatment also applied to the shift lever.

Aluminium pedals complement the new 'Technical Mesh' trim applied to the dashboard and doors, while the audio experience is improved with the fitment of a nine-speaker JBL®5 premium audio system.

The GR Sport offers all the active safety technologies found on the HiLux Rogue, and comes with a five-year/unlimited kilometre Toyota Warranty Advantage.

This is extended to seven years on engine and driveline, with capped-price servicing for the first three years/60,000km (whichever comes first) and each 6-month/10,000km service costing $290.

The HiLux GR Sport will be offered with Glacier White, Frosted White, Silver Sky (Stunning Silver from late 2023), Eclipse Black and Feverish Red finishes, with Glacier White, Frosted White and Feverish Red able to be paired with a two-tone black roof.

POWERFUL EXTERIOR DESIGN SIGNALS PERFORMANCE INTENTIONS OF HILUX GR SPORT

The GR Sport stands apart as the most visually distinctive member of the HiLux model range, providing visual pointers to its greater performance on- and off-road.

The increased capability of the GR Sport is made immediately clear with a wheel track which has been widened by 135mm at the front and 155 at the rear, while increasing ride height by 15mm.

Body panels have been adjusted to suit, starting at the front with a newly designed wide-track bumper that offers greater clearance and protection along its lower edges and improved aerodynamics along the upper sections.

This includes the adoption of highly visible "air curtains", which are not only functional but also provide a dramatic cue to the capability intentions of this vehicle.

These gains were confirmed by wind tunnel testing, with engineers installing aero ducts in the outer edges of the bumper next to the fog light bezel to help reduce turbulence around the front wheelarches.

A unique black grille has been applied featuring a signature GR mesh pattern, paired with 'TOYOTA' lettering and a GR badge. The black grille edges push outwards to underline the HiLux's darkened headlights, adding to the sense of extra width, while also providing excellent airflow and cooling for the 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel engine.

The lower bumper is finished in a protective silver and dark grey material, and is designed to help improve the Toyota HiLux GR Sport's approach angle for off-roading.

Below the front bumper sits a newly designed skid plate made of 4mm-thick pressed and laser-cut aluminium alloy and powder-coated in a matte silver colour, offering underbody protection during high-speed off-road driving. The skid plate is fully compatible with all HiLux safety systems.

The edges of the front bumper flow into large dark grey overfenders to help house the wider track width while also contributing to a reduction in aerodynamic drag.

Housed within the wheel arches are unique 17-inch black alloy wheels designed to minimise weight while reducing drag, wrapped in 265/65R17 Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tyres providing a blend of on-road quietness and off-road traction.

In place of standard side steps the Toyota HiLux GR Sport gains heavy-duty rock rails made of 2mm-thick steel tube, finished in a black powder coating.

The rock rails have been tested to support a fully laden vehicle, and feature 350MPa grade steel for the underbody square tube and mounting points.

At the rear, a gloss black bumper has been installed and paired with red powder coated rear recovery points made from 20mm thick steel plate with a large cross-sectional structure that has been tested to accommodate an 8,000kg snatch strap or 9,000lb winch.

The recovery points are fixed with high tensile bolts to the towbar, which includes a tongue, towball and wiring harness as standard to allow for a full 3,500kg braked towing capacity.

Toyota HiLux GR Sport comes standard with a five-piece black moulded tub liner with a 'GR' branded headboard, anti-slip floor and built-in dividers to support the fitment of load separators. The HiLux GR Sport supports fitment of accessories including a soft tonneau cover, hard lid, canopy, sports bar and dust defence kit.

Gloss black 'HILUX' badging has been applied to the tailgate and front doors, while a black finish has also been given to the exterior mirror covers and door handles.

The HiLux GR Sport will be available with five exterior colours - Glacier White gloss, Frosted White pearl, Silver Sky metallic (Stunning Silver from late 2023), Eclipse Black mica and Feverish Red metallic. Reflecting the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing colour palette, Glacier White, Frosted White and Feverish Red can also be paired with a black roof.

RALLY-INSPIRED DESIGN TOUCHES ELEVATE UNIQUE HILUX GR SPORT INTERIOR

The visual enhancements to the Toyota HiLux GR Sport are not just limited to the exterior design, but continue inside the vehicle with a list of unmistakeable GR styling touches.

Both stylish and functional, the changes start with unique bolstered GR front sports seats upholstered in special suede and leather-accented trim with contrast grey stitching, silver accents beneath the perforated suede seatbacks and GR logos on the headrests.

The driver's seat offers eight-way power adjustment, while both front seats come with a heating function.

The special suede and leather-accented trim is applied to the rear seats, along with red seatbelts all-round which help bring an extra visual highlight.

Matching the sporty front seats is a rally-style GR Sport steering wheel wrapped in leather-accented upholstery and featuring paddle shifters, a GR logo and a red 12 o'clock centre stripe.

A GR Sport shift lever and all-weather floor mats further differentiate the HiLux GR Sport interior.

A unique 'Technical Mesh' trim is applied to the door garnish and dash providing a stylish silver highlight, complemented by aluminium sports pedals.

The instrument cluster features a unique design for GR Sport, backlit in a blue hue to match other switches and illumination through the cabin. The multi-information display also features a unique GR start-up animation.

GR Sport uses an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, AM, FM and DAB+ digital radio, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that is augmented with the fitment of a nine-speaker JBL® premium audio system.

A panoramic view monitor is fitted as standard to the GR Sport, helping owners to gain a full view of the vehicle surrounds when navigating tight spaces.

The addition of a blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert bolster the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety technologies offered in the HiLux, while an electrochromatic rear-view mirror and smart key provide enhanced convenience for owners.

With the GR Sport interior consisting primarily of a black colour scheme, the headliner has been swapped to black to match the rest of the cabin.

MOST POWERFUL HILUX DIESEL TO DATE AND MODIFIED SUSPENSION UNDERPINS GR SPORT PERFORMANCE

The Toyota HiLux GR Sport represents far more than a series of visual upgrades, with significant mechanical enhancements helping to elevate the new grade as the flagship variant in the HiLux range.

Toyota engineers worked to enhance the output of the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine by changing the turbocharger characteristics and fuel injection control via ECU tuning.

The result is a 10 per cent increase in power and torque, with maximum outputs of 165kW at 3000rpm and 550Nm from 1600-2800rpm, making it the most powerful diesel HiLux to date.

The enhanced 1GD engine is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission which has been recalibrated to take advantage of the stronger engine outputs.

A change in oil pressure control has seen shift operation speeds enhanced, while the shift mapping has been revised to provide a more direct and responsive feel, both in normal and sport mode.

For manual shifting, the GR Sport features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for easy operation.

One of the most significant changes to the Toyota HiLux GR Sport has been the suspension upgrades for the wide-track layout shared with the HiLux Rogue.

Over and above the Rogue, the GR Sport gains further suspension upgrades including different coil spring tuning, with the front coil spring rigidity increased.

Front and rear shock absorbers have been upgraded to KYB monotube type dampers with increased piston diameter, tuned specifically to suit the HiLux GR Sport.

Furthermore, the rear sway bar has been removed to promote greater rear axle articulation.

Braking performance comes courtesy of large ventilated disc brakes on all four corners, with red-painted 338mm x 28mm four-piston fixed callipers at the front and 312mm x 18mm single-piston floating callipers at the rear.

The standard fitment of a towbar also helps improve the torsional rigidity of the chassis, contributing to enhanced handling stability while offering a 3,500kg braked towing capacity.
