The new M Mesh Edition gives the BMW X2 an even more distinctive and visually appealing edge. Since it was launched in spring 2018, the X2 has successfully fused an extrovert aura with sporting looks and modern lifestyle features, and carved out a very distinctive place for itself in the BMW X model family and beyond. And now the Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) is introducing an M mesh kidney grille and exclusive new colour combinations, together with an updated front end, to freshen up the premium compact segment once again. Here, the BMW X2 has filled the role of confident urban rebel in impressive style. And now the athletic BMW X2 M Mesh Edition will use its unique combination of individuality, driving pleasure, lifestyle elements and functionality to appeal to even more active and outgoing customers in a young and young-at-heart target group.

With its standalone design and exclusive details - such as the additional BMW logo on the C-pillar referencing classic BMW coupés like the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL - the BMW X2 has earned itself a worldwide fan club. Around 40 per cent of BMW X2 sales so far have been recorded in Europe. The Chinese market has claimed a share of roughly 30 per cent, and approximately 10 per cent of customers purchasing the dynamic SAC have been in the USA. The BMW X2 marks the entry point into the BMW X family of Sports Activity Coupés and has a very distinct place in the line-up alongside its larger siblings - the BMW X4 and X6.

Power of Choice: customers can take their pick from six engines

The BMW X2 M Mesh Edition uses the M Sport X model as its starting point. In keeping with the BMW Group's Power of Choice approach, customers can select from three efficient diesel engines, two petrol engines and the plug-in hybrid drive system in the BMW X2 xDrive25e. Depending on the drive system selected, customers can order their car with sDrive front-wheel drive or BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, a manual gearbox or automatic Steptronic transmission.

Exterior

Since the launch of the new BMW X2 xDrive25e in July 2020, all variants of the Sports Activity Coupé have an attractively revised front-end design which further accentuates the sporting aura of the X2. The clear surfaces in this area of the car lend it a more modern appearance.

Eye-catching BMW M mesh kidney grille and new colour accents

The new M Mesh Edition builds stylistically on the M Sport X model and gives the BMW X2 an even more exclusive and distinctive appearance. The most prominent change is the BMW M mesh kidney grille in High-gloss Black. Like the grille on the BMW X2 M35i, it has a pronounced three-dimensional mesh inspired by racing cars. The new signature colour Frozen Black-Brown metallic - a mocha-like shade - can be found on the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition in the exclusive inserts in the bumper trim, the prominent cladding on the side skirts and doors, and the wheel arch trim.

The special-edition model can also be specified at no extra cost with bold new decals on the bonnet, the sides of the front bumper and the front and rear doors. In bold Orange, they provide the perfect complement to the new Brooklyn Grey metallic paint finish exclusive to the M Mesh Edition, as well as the Sapphire Black metallic exterior shade. If one of the other paint shades - Alpine White, Phytonic Blue metallic or Sunset Orange metallic - is specified, the decals come in Black. The colour of the decals is shared by the inserts for the new M aerodynamic wheels in 19- and 20-inch formats.

BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line with extended features comes as standard. As well as the High-gloss Black window and exterior mirror surrounds, the mirror base, mirror triangle, B-pillar trim and trim surround on the C-pillars, this package also includes the surround for the M mesh kidney grille, a ring around the BMW badge on the tailgate and exhaust tailpipe finishers in Black Chrome.

LED headlights with integrated bad weather light shape the front end design

The clear surfacing of the updated front end catches the eye and teams up with the standard LED headlights to create a powerful appearance. The absence of the circular front fog lights featured previously brings extra clarity to the design of the front bumper. Their role is taken over by the bad weather light integrated into the LED headlights. In adverse weather conditions and poor visibility, judicious activation of the cornering light provides optimal illumination of the road's edge. Another new feature is the projection of an X2 logo from the exterior mirror on the driver's side as part of the standard lighting package, which also includes door handle lighting, ground lighting, exterior mirror lighting and door entry light.

Adaptive LED headlights with matrix high-beam function as an option

Adaptive LED Headlights including a four-segment matrix function for high beam are also available for the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition as an option. These headlights help to increase visibility, while also avoiding dazzling other road users. High beam is split into several LED segments, which can be activated and deactivated independently of one another to adapt road illumination to the traffic situation at hand. Likewise optional are the visually stunning BMW Individual lights Shadowline.

Interior

The visually expressive exterior of the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition, with its new colour accents, extends into the interior. The most distinctive feature of the new model is the standard bi-colour interior appointments. The exclusive covers for the M sport seats with integral head restraints and the rear seat bench feature a blend of Dakota leather in eye-catching Mocha and Anthracite-coloured Alcantara. Adding the finishing touches to the upholstery is contrast stitching in Orange, which can also be found on the instrument panel and centre console. This creates a colour connection with the decals at the front end and sides of the body, as well as the accents in the exclusive M aerodynamic wheels. The floor mats have edge binding and stitching in Orange - or Brown in the BMW X2 xDrive25e. The BMW X2 M Mesh Edition also brings special entry sills with "Edition" lettering.

Sporty interior

M sport seats with integral head restraints and a selection of other BMW M GmbH hallmarks heighten the car's sporting impression. For example, the M stainless steel pedals fitted as standard provide the perfect complement to the M driver's footrest. Also included as standard are the M leather steering wheel and a car key with exclusive M identifier. Cars with a manual gearbox also have a gearshift lever with M badging. The interior trim strips are in Aluminium Hexagon Anthracite, the BMW Individual headliner in sporty Anthracite. Exclusive LED fibre-optic light guides in the door trim add flourishes of colour. The cabin showcases BMW's hallmark driver focus with ergonomically arranged controls. The driver's raised seating position provides an unbeatable view out and optimal command over the task of driving. The modern black-panel technology in the instrument cluster and information display has considerable visual impact, and the high-degree of functionality provided by the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition also marks it out. One example here is the centre console with a combination of open compartments and others that can be closed using roller lids. The boot has a capacity of 470 litres (BMW X2 xDrive25e: 410 litres), ensuring it is excellently equipped for leisure activities of all kinds - from shopping trips to ski weekends and mountain bike tours. Also providing a feeling of freedom is the optional panoramic roof, which floods the cabin with light. The front section of the panoramic roof can be tilted and opened like a conventional sunroof.

Drive systems

Customers can take their pick from three different types of drive system for the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition. The SAC is available with three efficient diesel engines, two petrol units and a plug-in hybrid drive system, all of which meet the Euro 6d emissions standard. The BMW X2 additionally offers a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmission.

Plug-in hybrid drive system in the BMW X2 xDrive25e offers electric range of up to 57 kilometres (35 miles)

The plug-in hybrid powertrain recently introduced for this model series endows the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition with remarkably efficient performance and the ability to drive with zero local emissions. In the BMW X2 xDrive25e, a highly efficient electric motor, whose output of 70 kW/95 hp and torque of 165 Nm (122 lb-ft) are relayed to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission, teams up with a 1.5-litre petrol engine generating 92 kW/125 hp and peak torque of 220 Nm (162 lb-ft). The engine's power is directed to the front wheels through a six-speed Steptronic transmission. The resultant hybrid-specific all-wheel drive combines with system output of 162 kW/220 hp and overall torque of 385 Nm (284 lb-ft) to make the BMW X2 xDrive25e exceptionally agile and deliver a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 6.8 seconds. The X2 xDrive25e also displays its sporting verve when putting in a quick burst of speed or overtaking, thanks to the electric boost effect produced by the drive system.

The lithium-ion battery that stores the energy for the electric drive unit employs the very latest battery cell technology, giving it exceptionally high energy density. The high-voltage battery's gross energy capacity of 10.0 kWh translates into an all-electric range of up to 57 kilometres (35 miles) in the statutory EU test cycle. When the new BMW X2 xDrive25e is driving on the electric motor's power alone (in MAX eDrive mode), top speed is 135 km/h (84 mph). With the engine and electric motor working in unison, the car's maximum speed increases to 195 km/h (121 mph). The high-voltage battery can be charged from zero to 80 per cent in 3.8 hours when plugged in to a domestic socket, while a full 100 per cent charge takes around five hours. When hooked up to a BMW i Wallbox, charging from 0 to 80 per cent takes 2.4 hours and from 0 to 100 per cent around 3.2 hours. The SAVE BATTERY mode can be activated while on the move to keep the high-voltage battery charge at the current level or increase it by recuperating brake energy.

The high-voltage battery's space-saving installation under the rear seat means there is only a negligible loss of luggage capacity compared to conventionally powered BMW X2 variants, and primary load space remains unchanged. The plug-in hybrid model also has a highly versatile interior, courtesy of the standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats that allow load capacity to be increased from 410 to a maximum of 1,290 litres by lowering the backrests.

Choice of two petrol engines

The entry-level member of the special edition's line-up is the BMW X2 sDrive18i. Following updates to comply with the Euro 6d emissions standard, its 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit generates 100 kW/136 hp and feeds peak torque of 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission is available as an option. The BMW X2 sDrive18i accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.6 seconds and has a top speed of 205 km/h (127 mph).

The more powerful petrol variant comes in both front-wheel-drive and allwheel- drive format. This 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine employed here has also been converted to Euro 6d, which now gives it an output of 131 kW /178 hp. In the BMW X2 sDrive20i, it drives the front wheels and delivers peak torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) via the standard seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is completed in 7.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 227 km/h (141 mph). The BMW X2 xDrive20i comes with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables it to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 7.3 seconds and post a top speed of 224 km/h (139 mph). With its maximum trailer load of 2,000 kg, the BMW X2 xDrive20i is capable of towing boat and horse box trailers or larger caravans.

Efficient diesel engines with three power ratings

The BMW X2 offers fans of frugal diesels a choice of three options. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit under the bonnet of both the front-wheeldrive BMW X2 sDrive18d and the BMW X2 xDrive18d produces 110 kW/150 hp with torque peaking at 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). Both models are equipped with a six-speed manual shift as standard with the option of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The BMW X2 sDrive18d has a top speed of 207 km/h (129 mph) and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 9.3 seconds, while the BMW X2 xDrive18d clocks 9.2 seconds for the same sprint (9.4 seconds with Steptronic) and reaches a maximum 206 km/h (128 mph).

The front-wheel-drive BMW X2 sDrive20d and its BMW X2 xDrive20d all-wheel-drive sibling are both powered by a 140 kW/190 hp 2.0-litre diesel unit. Its peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) is channelled through the standard eight-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables the BMW X2 sDrive20d to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.9 seconds, while the BMW X2 xDrive20d betters that time by 0.2 seconds. The power continues to flow until the speedometer hits 221 km/h (137 mph) in the all-wheel-drive model and 224 km/h (139 mph) in the front-wheel-drive variant.

The most powerful representative of the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition range is the BMW X2 xDrive25d, whose 2.0-litre diesel engine generates 170 kW/231 hp and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). The BMW X2 xDrive25d races to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 237 km/h (147 mph). Standard specification includes an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. As with the other X2 models, a Steptronic Sport version of this transmission is also optionally available. The Sport variant allows manual gear changes to be performed even faster using the shift paddles on the M Sport steering wheel, meaning that the already extremely agile BMW X2 M Mesh Edition models can be driven with even greater sporting flair.

Connectivity

The BMW X2 M Mesh Edition boasts intuitive operation and intelligent connectivity, allowing the person at the wheel to focus their attention entirely on the most important task at hand: driving. The ID6 display and operating concept offers three different ways of operating the individual vehicle and navigation functions: using the iDrive Controller, the Control Display's touchscreen functionality or - if the BMW Navigation option is fitted - a voice control system capable of understanding naturally formulated sentences. The freestanding Control Display (which can also be easily operated by the front passenger) measures 6.5 inches across in standard guise and provides a quick overview of all key information - thanks, for instance, to the tiles shown in the display's main menu. A hands-free facility with Bluetooth interface and DAB digital radio reception are likewise included as standard.

The optional BMW Navigation system features an 8.8-inch Control Display whose operation mimics a smartphone's intuitive touch control, along with a 5.7-inch information display in the instrument cluster. There is also the option of Real Time Traffic Information, whose up-to-the-minute traffic data helps with route planning and enables drivers to react quickly to possible hold-ups. Upgrading to BMW Navigation Plus brings an even larger 10.25-inch Control Display as well as the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects all important driving information and navigation/assistance system readouts onto the windscreen, where they appear in high resolution in the driver's field of view. Opting for smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® allows selected iPhone functions to be used wirelessly and with ease via the vehicle's Control Display. The telephony with wireless charging option, meanwhile, allows inductive charging of compatible smartphones and mobile phones, which can also be hooked up with the car's external antenna.

Intelligently connected with BMW ConnectedDrive Services

The BMW X2 M Mesh Edition links up with the BMW ConnectedDrive Services, enabling the driver to organise their daily routines as efficiently as possible, both inside and outside the car. The BMW Connected app and, in future, the My BMW app will keep the driver informed of the vehicle's status at all times, while they can also access their BMW X2 remotely using Remote Services. These functions make it possible to lock and unlock the vehicle via the app, for example, display its current location or send the destination address from a smartphone to the car's navigation system before even starting the journey. Free vehicle apps available via BMW Online also provide up-to-date weather forecasts or the latest news.

Extended Remote Services for the BMW X2 xDrive25e

The BMW X2 xDrive25e plug-in hybrid comes with an even more extensive range of Remote Services. Connected eDrive Services can be accessed free of charge for three years - both from the car and via the BMW Connected or My BMW app - and allow customers to search for and display charging stations, for example. Once a charging station has been selected, details such as connector type, availability and payment options can be called up and the destination sent straight to the navigation system. The plug-in hybrid model's current electric range can also be displayed at any time along with the lithiumion battery's charge status. Vehicle charging - when hooked up to the optional BMW i Wallbox, for example - can be easily scheduled and pre-programmed via the BMW Connected app.
