The open-top four-seater follows the lead of the new BMW 4-Series Coupé by featuring a standalone design with a notably sharper profile than its predecessor. Its distinct vehicle concept with model-specific body structure and bespoke chassis tuning instils the new BMW 4-Series Convertible with exceptional dynamic flair. This also serves to distinguish it more clearly than ever from the new 3-Series Sedan, which provided the technological blueprint for the new BMW 4-Series range.
BMW has a long-standing tradition of fusing the brand's hallmark sporting prowess with the pleasure of open-top driving in a premium midsize model. It was 35 years ago that the first ever BMW 3-Series Convertible was unveiled at the IAA international motor show in Frankfurt. The open-top four-seater car was an instant hit with its graceful silhouette, low, horizontal shoulderline and a seating position that further intensified contact with the outside world. Unrivalled in its segment, this formula for generating supreme driving pleasure under the open sky has been consistently refined by each successive model generation, with the new BMW 4-Series Convertible now the sixth generation to deliver a contemporary take on the original concept.
As it has evolved, the midsize BMW convertible has also acquired an increasing sense of independence in terms of its design, body and specification, and this was reflected by a separate model name for the first time in the predecessor to the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. The latest edition stands apart from the 3-Series Sedan even more distinctly. The advances over the outgoing model manifest themselves predominantly in clearly superior performance capabilities and the new panel bow softtop design that combines the practical benefits of a retractable hardtop with the puristic appeal of a fabric hood - the best of both worlds, in other words.
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible will be launched worldwide starting in March 2021. It will be built at BMW Plant Dingolfing, the BMW Group's largest production facility in Germany and home to the BMW 8-Series Convertible and its siblings. Other models rolling off the production line at Dingolfing include the BMW 5-Series, BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo and BMW 7-Series luxury sedan.
Exterior design: distinctive proportions create an aura of sportiness and elegance
With its dynamically stretched proportions the new BMW 4-Series Convertible makes no secret of either its class-leading sporting prowess or the stylish elegance inherent in an open-top four-seater built for exclusive driving pleasure. At the same time, the brand's new design language has produced a striking interpretation of the low-slung silhouette that is traditionally a defining feature of premium midsize BMW convertibles. This aspect is particularly noticeable with the roof down and combines with the powerfully sculpted surfaces to bring the sporty nature of the new 4-Series Convertible prominently to the fore.
The newcomer's elegant yet powerful presence also stems from its larger exterior dimensions. At 4,768 millimetres, it is 128 mm longer than its predecessor, while width has increased by 27 mm to 1,852 mm and wheelbase has grown by 41 mm to 2,851 mm. The vehicle height is 1,384 mm with the roof closed. Increased track widths (+ 28 mm at the front and + 18 mm at the rear) accentuate the car's muscular stature while also having a beneficial effect on its sporty handling qualities. The fine balance between sportiness and elegance for which BMW is renowned shines through again in the long bonnet, short overhangs and long doors with frameless windows.
Front end includes expressive styling accents with a rich tradition
As well as the car's proportions, it is the front end of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible that most vividly highlights its standalone character and distinguishes it most clearly from the new BMW 3-Series Sedan. Its defining element is the large, vertical BMW kidney grille, which takes pride of place at the centre of the open-top four-seater's front end, just as on the new BMW 4-Series Coupé. The kidney grille, with its pronounced forward slant, employs air intakes with a standard mesh structure, indicating the high quantity of cooling air required for the powerful engine behind the scenes. Its upright elements connected in the centre reprise a design feature from the brand's past - one familiar from legendary classics such as the BMW 328 and BMW 3.0 CSi - while adding a modern twist.
The BMW kidney grille extends down almost to the lower edge of the front apron and is framed by crisp, precisely sculpted surfaces. Like the contours of the headlights, the bonnet's arrow-shaped lines zero in on the kidney grille. The optional LED fog lights and the likewise vertically designed Air Curtains positioned at the outer edges merge harmoniously into the elegantly styled surfaces.
LED headlights as standard, BMW Laserlight optional
Alongside the BMW kidney grille, the extremely slim headlights also do their bit to give the front end of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible its arresting appearance. With outlines that cut deep into the front wheel arches and taper towards the kidney grille and light sources in a side-by-side arrangement, they create the focused gaze on the road that has become a signature design cue of the BMW brand. The new BMW 4-Series Convertible comes as standard with full-LED headlights whose sophisticated lighting technology is visible in detail. This includes two slender, U-shaped fibre-optic light guides that serve as the daytime driving lights. And the turn indicators come in the form of three high-quality glass blades at the outer reaches of the headlight units.
Among the items on the options list for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible are Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight including BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant. Here, low and high beam are generated from both the headlights' outer and inner light sources. This equipment item also comes with the cornering light and adaptive cornering functions with variable road illumination optimised for urban and motorway driving. At speeds above 60 km/h (37 mph), BMW Laserlight increases high-beam range to a maximum 550 metres and follows the course of the road dynamically. Three-dimensional hexagonal fibre-optic light guides supply the daytime driving lights. Each of the outer daytime driving light elements also doubles as a turn indicator.
BMW Laserlight can be easily identified by the blue inlays at the upper edge of the headlight units. Both LED light variants are available in BMW Individual lights Shadowline form, with darkened inlays adorning their upper edges.
Elegant silhouette, distinctive roofline, striking rear
The dynamically stretched side profile helps to give the new BMW 4-Series Convertible a low-slung look that exudes sporty flair, while the powerfully contoured surfaces intensify its athletic character. The far-back positioning of the seats also becomes particularly conspicuous when the roof is open. This guarantees the open-top driving experience readily associated with BMW convertibles, highlighted by the sun on your face and wind in your hair. When closed, the softtop roof gracefully arches over the passenger cell, with its compact form creating a distinctive and eye-catching notchback silhouette.
In the area around the rear wheel arches, precise lines and three-dimensionally sculpted surfaces combine to form powerful shoulders that give the new BMW 4-Series Convertible a broad-set, muscular appearance, particularly with the roof down. This impression is reinforced by the slim rear light units extending well into the flanks. The lights are stylishly darkened, with their rear light bars illuminating uniformly to reproduce the L shape familiar from other BMW models. Vertically arranged apertures at the outer edges of the clearly structured rear apron mimic the appearance of the Air Curtains at the front. Dual-branch tailpipes - circular or trapezoidal, depending on the model variant - frame the lower section of the rear apron.
M Sport model with characteristic design; model-specific accents for the flagship variants of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is also available in M Sport form as an alternative to standard specification. This equipment variant adds extra-large outer air intakes in the front apron and a strikingly sculpted rear apron with an inlay in Dark Shadow and a diffuser element in High-gloss Black to reinforce its dynamic aura. Other design features gracing the M Sport model include air intake trim elements, side trim strips and exterior mirror bases in a High-gloss Black finish. In cars featuring optional BMW Individual High-gloss Shadowline trim with extended features, the kidney grille surround and exhaust tailpipe finishers also sport a classy dark colour scheme.
As well as the body features of the M Sport model designed to optimise the supply of cooling air and aerodynamics, the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and BMW M440d xDrive Convertible also come with a kidney grille surround, air intake trim, exterior mirror caps and trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe finishers in Cerium Grey. A rear apron inlay in High-gloss Black provides an additional flourish. Added to which, BMW M cars and the M Sport model can be specified with an M Carbon exterior package, which comprises air intake finishers for the front-wings, exterior mirror caps and a diffuser element in the rear apron all made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Wide range of exterior colours and BMW Individual paint finishes, plus two softtop colours to choose from
The two non-metallic paint shades Black and Alpine White, plus the Sapphire Black metallic, Mineral White metallic, Bluestone metallic, Sunset Orange metallic, Portimao Blue metallic, Arctic Race Blue metallic and new San Remo Green metallic options are available from launch for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. Customers can also choose from the BMW Individual paint finishes Dravite Grey metallic and Tanzanite Blue metallic. And for a guaranteed highly exclusive look, the new 4-Series Convertible can also be specified in a number of BMW Individual special paint finishes, including the visually expressive matt shimmer of Frozen Portimao Blue metallic and Frozen Deep Grey metallic.
The softtop roof comes in two variants to match the selected body colour. As an alternative to the standard Black, it is also available in an Anthracite Silver effect finish, which gives the fabric a classy metallic shimmer, especially in direct sunlight.
Interior: driver-centric cockpit design and four seats immersed in a premium ambience of sporting elegance
The blend of sportiness and elegance that characterises the new BMW 4-Series Convertible is carried through into the cabin. The driver-centric cockpit design is further enhanced by the large screen grouping of instrument cluster and Control Display. Together with the ergonomically optimised arrangement of the controls, this helps to focus the driver's attention on the road ahead. Standard equipment includes sports seats in the front with ergonomically designed belt feeders that make it easier for the driver and front passenger to fasten their seat belts. The high-set centre console combines with the harmoniously coordinated surface structuring of the instrument panel and door panel trim to create an enveloping environment for the front seat occupants. In the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible, BMW M440d xDrive Convertible and M Sport model option, the outer edges of the centre console have knee pads to encourage a sporty driving style.
Standout features specific to the Convertible's interior include the smartly styled shoulder panelling, with unbroken trim edging which sweeps around the entire cabin. Subtly styled domes on the rear shelf echo the shape of the rear head restraints. The rear seats have a clear individual seat design, underscored by the rear centre armrest's built-in storage and cup holder module.
Horizontal lines define the structure of the elegantly designed instrument panel in the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. Its width is further emphasised by the contours and high-quality electroplated strips extending into the door areas. At the centre of the panel is a sharply designed unit accommodating the displays and buttons for the air conditioning and the central air vents. The start/stop button for the engine is now positioned in a classy control panel in the centre console, where the newly designed selector lever is joined by the iDrive Controller and the buttons for the Driving Experience Control switch and electromechanical parking brake. The light functions are operated from a panel of buttons next to the steering wheel.
High-quality interior trim strips also play a role in the modern premium ambience of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible's cabin. Standard specification includes interior trim strips in High-gloss Black with accent strips in Pearl-effect Chrome, while five alternatives - among them open-pore fine wood and Aluminium Mesh Effect - can be selected from the options list. Three BMW Individual interior trim strip variants are also available.
M Sport model and BMW M models: exuding dynamism inside and out
Exclusive design cues inside the M Sport model shine a further spotlight on its exceptionally dynamic character. Sports seats with M-specific Vernasca leather upholstery, an M leather steering wheel, door sill plates bearing the M logo and interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon with accent strips in Pearl-effect Chrome lend visual power to the richly engaging driving experience. Model lettering in the digital instrument cluster display also points to the special status of the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and BMW M440d xDrive Convertible.
Body and softtop roof
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is the perfect place to indulge in the pleasures of sporting performance while also enjoying the exclusive experience of open-top driving. To endow the open-top four-seater car with more agile and precise handling qualities, it is built around an independently designed body structure, just like its 4-Series Coupé sibling. Body stiffness has been increased by means of additional bracing elements engineered specifically for the convertible model. The optimised weight, almost perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution (depending on engine variant and equipment), low centre of gravity, excellent aerodynamics and stiff chassis mountings are additional factors in the sporty handling of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible.
The construction of the roof also bears testimony to the vehicle concept's unwavering commitment to delivering an intensely sporty driving experience. An innovative panel bow softtop has been purpose-developed for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible and combines the solidity and all-weather capabilities of the retractable hardtop fitted on its predecessor with the classical appeal of a fabric hood. The new softtop design sets class-leading standards in terms of styling, premium feel, and thermal and acoustic comfort.
Harmonious design, optimised weight: the new softtop
The softtop's new panel bow design enhances the appearance and comfort of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible at the same time as improving driving dynamics and everyday usability. It comprises large panel bow elements with a paper-honeycomb construction, a flush-fitting glass rear window, several layers of insulation and a fabric cover available in two colours. The softtop pulls taut over the passenger cell when closed, with the high-grade fabric material lying flat on the joint-free arrangement of adjacent panel bow elements, meaning that neither their contours nor the softtop frame shows through the surface. The result is a coupé-like roofline with a puristic softtop feel.
The panel bow softtop is some 40 per cent lighter than the predecessor car's retractable hardtop. At the same time, its levels of acoustic and thermal comfort are far superior to a conventional softtop's. The smooth surface, meanwhile, reduces wind noise in the cabin while also having a positive impact on the new model's aerodynamic properties. The effective insulation makes it easier to heat up the interior in low outside temperatures, and the occupants in the front also benefit from 5 millimetres more headroom than before.
When the roof is opened, the panel bow elements stack one above the other in a single flowing movement before being stowed away beneath the softtop lid, which tilts back at the same time. The three fixed segments of the fabric cover also fold together in a compact Z before disappearing into the softtop compartment. The softtop opens and closes quietly and efficiently thanks to its electric drive mechanism.
The opening and closing process is initiated by pressing a button on the centre console and takes around 18 seconds. After closing the roof, the side windows are automatically raised. The new BMW 4-Series Convertible also takes sudden changes in the weather conditions in its stride, as the softtop can also be quickly opened and closed while travelling at up to 50 km/h (31 mph). And if the Comfort Access option is fitted, the roof can also be operated by remote control.
Variable softtop compartment, high-quality wind deflector
The panel bow softtop's compact construction and intelligent stowage mechanism mean that it takes up far less space in the rear of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible and also offers a 40 per cent weight saving over the retractable hardtop on the outgoing model. When driving with the top down, the boot can hold 300 litres of luggage, an increase of 80 litres. And when the roof is closed, the variable softtop compartment's flap can be simply moved into a vertical position by hand from the boot, raising the cover that marks the bottom of the compartment in the process. This creates additional space for luggage, increasing boot capacity to 385 litres - 15 litres more than previously.
A through-loading facility to the rear compartment now comes as standard. This means that very long items of luggage or other large objects can be securely carried by folding the rear backrest down. To prevent damage to the roof, the variable softtop compartment features an overloading safeguard that stops the softtop from opening when the boot space is full to capacity.
The optional wind deflector ensures effective control of the airflow through the cabin. It can be attached in the rear of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible or removed again in just a few simple steps, with the roof either up or down. The wind deflector consists of two mesh elements each enclosed by a frame and is designed to reduce wind noise and unwanted air turbulence in the car's interior. The wind deflector's upper frame element can be raised into position by hand. The deflector can be completely folded up and either stored in the ideally designed bag supplied with it or placed in a storage compartment behind the rear backrest to keep it within reach at all times, even when carrying luggage.
Optimised aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight design
The car's distinctive design, the softtop's innovative construction and the model-specific proportions help to give the new BMW 4-Series Convertible a far more dynamic look than the model it replaces, at the same time as putting clear water between it and the new BMW 3-Series Sedan in terms of overall identity. It has a long wheelbase and a rear track 23 millimetres wider than the 3-Series Sedan's, which creates the perfect recipe for balancing supreme ride comfort with excellent cornering dynamics.
Despite the switch from retractable hardtop to new panel bow fabric roof, the new BMW 4-Series Convertible betters its predecessor for aerodynamic performance. Its low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.27 (BMW 420d Convertible) is unsurpassed by its competitors and a mere 0.02 off the ultra-low figure for the new BMW 4-Series Coupé. The particularly sleek softtop roof, an almost completely sealed underbody, improved air flap control, Air Curtains, an aerodynamically designed boot lid with the aerials integrated out of sight and numerous other measures all help to keep drag to a minimum.
The weight-saving design of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible's body and chassis components has a beneficial effect on both agility and efficiency. Intelligent lightweight design results in targeted optimisation of each component's weight and functional properties. The front end of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible uses an engine side member made from extruded aluminium profiles and die-cast aluminium spring struts. The bonnet, front side panels and doors also have an aluminium construction, and this alone shaves around 20 kilograms off the weight of the predecessor model. Moving to the rear, the boot lid itself is thermoplastic while a material made out of natural fibres is used for the boot lid lining, helping to reduce weight and preserve resources.
Extremely stiff body structure with additional convertible-specific bracing
The intelligent mix of materials helps to minimise vehicle weight and combines with optimised load paths to enhance the body's rigidity and crash safety. The agile handling abilities and precise steering characteristics of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible are achieved in part through targeted measures for increasing the stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings. Like the new BMW 4-Series Coupé, the open-top model is fitted with a shear panel for connecting the front spring strut towers to the bulkhead, integral tower-to-front end struts and bracing elements in the rear axle area.
An additional pair of struts for reinforcing the vehicle's rear end gives it superior straight-line stability and greater poise under high lateral acceleration. Other model-specific features for the convertible include side skirts with extreme torsional rigidity, a double heel board, an aluminium shear panel low down in the front end, a reinforced transmission tunnel in the rear compartment and a likewise extremely rigid floor plate at the rear. As a result, static torsional rigidity of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible is up by four per cent overall compared to its predecessor.
Complete passive safety concept including rollover protection system
A comprehensive passive safety concept maximises occupant protection in an extremely wide range of collisions and factors in the requirements of crash testing procedures in car markets around the world. Alongside the super-stiff passenger cell and highly resilient supporting structures, it also includes integrated safety electronics which deploy the restraint systems in the right sequence, at the optimum moment and with the required effect for the type and severity of the collision at hand.
The hot-stamped steels and aluminium alloys used for the safety passenger cell are supplemented by multi-phase steels for extra reinforcement. The reinforced side skirts are manufactured from tailored rolled steel blanks with varying wall thicknesses to cater for the different loads. There are also high-strength side impact members in the doors and sturdy seat cross-members to reduce deformation depth in the event of a side-on collision. The full ensemble of restraint systems comprises three-point inertia-reel seatbelts with belt tensioners on all seats, as well as front, head and side airbags whose deployment is controlled by the central safety electronics. A further integral element is the new BMW 4-Series Convertible's rollover protection system. It is triggered automatically the instant the data analysed by the central safety electronics indicates the car is at risk of turning over. The system consists of two protective bars made from high-strength aluminium and fitted out of sight behind the rear-seat head restraints. In hazardous situations, the pre-tensioned bars are extended by a pyrotechnic charge in a fraction of a second, and combine with the extremely sturdy windscreen frame to create a survival space for the occupants.
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is also equipped as standard with an active bonnet system to optimise pedestrian protection. Pyrotechnic actuators raise the bonnet if the vehicle collides with a pedestrian, creating more deformation space between the bonnet and the hard underlying structures.
Engines, transmissions and BMW xDrive
Instantaneous power delivery, a vigorous appetite for revs and exceptional refined performance are the common denominators of the engines offered for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. The various petrol and diesel units with either four or six cylinders are all members of the current Efficient Dynamics family. They boast the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions figures in exemplary fashion. Meanwhile, the introduction of mild hybrid technology with a 48V starter-generator gives a further boost to efficiency with the added benefit of even sharper response. The exhaust gas aftertreatment technology has also been improved, as a result of which all model variants comply with the Euro 6d emissions standard.
Thanks to their outstanding capabilities, the power units lend themselves to both sporty driving and relaxed cruising in the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. The range now peaks with the new BMW M440i xDrive Convertible, whose exceptionally powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine propels it to exceptional feats of performance. The new BMW 4-Series Convertible will also be available with a choice of two four-cylinder petrol units and a four-cylinder diesel from launch. The line-up is set to expand further with the arrival of two straight-six diesel engines over the course of 2021.
All the engines link up as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission offering not just optimised efficiency and sharper shift dynamics, but also the optional Sprint function - a new route to an even sportier driving experience. The engine's power is fed to the road via either classical rear-wheel drive or, in the case of the extremely potent BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and BMW M440d xDrive Convertible flagship models, intelligent all-wheel drive.
Mild hybrid technology optimises efficiency and sprinting ability
The straight-six petrol unit in the new BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and all the diesel engines available for the open-top four-seater employ mild hybrid technology, which both optimises efficiency and sharpens power delivery. Fitting a 48V starter-generator and second battery greatly increases the scope for utilising Brake Energy Regeneration and the electrical power it produces. This energy can be supplied to the 12V electrical system or used for generating additional drive power. The 48V starter-generator acts likes an electric drive unit that assists the engine and also delivers an electric boost effect when accelerating. By instantly putting an extra 8 kW/11 hp on tap, it ensures even swifter response off the line and even quicker bursts of speed when already on the move.
Thanks to the 48V battery's extra storage capacity, electricity can be generated almost exclusively by harvesting braking energy. This lightens the combustion engine's workload and increases its efficiency. The powerful starter-generator has the additional benefit of allowing the engine to be switched off and restarted very swiftly with remarkably little vibration when the coasting and Auto Start Stop functions are in use. Under braking on the approach to a junction or the end of a queue of traffic, for example, the engine can be switched off as soon as the car's speed drops below 15 km/h (9 mph). And if the coasting function is activated, the engine is also completely deactivated rather than just being decoupled from the drivetrain. What's more, this function is now available not just in ECO Pro mode but also COMFORT mode. When the Steptronic transmission is in eighth gear, the driver is also able to engage coasting mode by operating the upshift paddle on the right of the steering wheel.
Six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible delivers smile-inducing performance
The trio of petrol engines available for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible feature latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, comprising a twin-scroll turbocharger, a High Precision Injection system whose maximum pressure has been upped from 200 to 350 bar, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, along with cooling and oil supply systems that are now even more efficient. Petrol particulate filters have been added to improve emission control.
The straight-six unit under the bonnet of the new BMW M440i xDrive Convertible has all the tools to maximise the pleasure of accelerating and powering through corners with the wind in your hair and the engine's soundtrack in your ears. The development of the power unit harnessed the racing expertise of BMW M GmbH. It features weight-optimised pistons and con rods, plus a twin-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling. Maximum output from its 3.0-litre displacement is 275 kW/374 hp, an increase of 35 kW/48 hp over the most powerful model variant in the preceding generation of the BMW 4-Series Convertible. Maximum torque stands at 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) and can be summoned between 1,900 and 5,000 rpm. The resulting flow of muscle power enables the car to race from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds. These bursts of speed are accompanied by the distinctive sound produced by the standard M Sport exhaust system. With the Driving Experience Control switch set to SPORT or SPORT+ mode, in particular, the system adjusts the exhaust flaps to give the straight-six engine's power delivery a suitably authentic backing track. The new BMW M440i xDrive Convertible posts average fuel consumption of 7.4 - 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres (38.2 - 40.9 mpg imp), equating to CO2 figures of 169 - 159 grams per kilometre.
Free-revving, refined and efficient: the four-cylinder petrol engines in the BMW 430i Convertible and BMW 420i Convertible
Extensive upgrades to their respective four-cylinder petrol engines give the BMW 430i Convertible and BMW 420i Convertible sporty performance characteristics and superior efficiency. The more powerful of the 2.0-litre pair generates maximum output of 190 kW/258 hp - an increase of 5 kW/6 hp on the engine it replaces - and delivers peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) between 1,550 and 4,400 rpm. This enables the new BMW 430i Convertible to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 6.2 seconds. The engine's optimised efficiency levels result in combined fuel consumption and emissions figures of 6.4 - 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres (44.1 - 47.1 mpg imp) and 147 - 138 grams per kilometre.
The four-cylinder engine in the new BMW 420i Convertible is another shining example of efficiency and the free-revving performance typical of BMW power units. Its maximum output of 135 kW/184 hp and peak torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) between 1,350 and 4,000 rpm translate into a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 8.2 seconds. The new BMW 420i Convertible returns average fuel consumption figures of 6.1 - 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres (46.3 - 49.6 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 140 - 131 grams per kilometre.
Two-stage turbocharging for diesel engines
The latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in all diesel engines for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible comprises two-stage turbocharging along with an enhanced common-rail direct injection system. The quick response of the smaller turbocharger ensures eager power delivery, while the injection system, with its increased operating pressure, precise metering and fine atomisation of the fuel, gives a more efficient, cleaner combustion process. The system of emission control for the diesel engines employs BMW BluePerformance technology, including an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel unit in the new BMW 420d Convertible generates maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp, with peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) on tap from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. The instantaneous power delivery enables the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.6 seconds. The engine's improved efficiency is illustrated by the combined fuel consumption and CO2 figures of 4.5 - 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres (62.8 - 67.3 mpg imp) and 119 - 111 grams per kilometre.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line unit for the new BMW 430d Convertible (due to be available from July 2021) serves up power in an instant and continues to increase it unabated with the help of the variable turbine geometry in the turbocharging system's low-pressure stage. There is now 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of peak torque on tap between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, an increase of 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) over the previous model. The maximum output of the new diesel unit stands at 210 kW/286 hp, 20 kW/28 hp more than before. This allows the new BMW 430d Convertible to accelerate from 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds. Its fuel consumption and emissions figures come in at 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres (50.4 mpg imp) and 147 grams per kilometre (predicted figures based on the WLTP test cycle) respectively.
Also set to join the diesel portfolio is a second 3.0-litre straight-six unit that will power the new BMW M440d xDrive Convertible (due to be available from November 2021). Compared to the most powerful diesel engine available for the outgoing model, maximum output has climbed by 20 kW/27 hp to 250 kW/340 hp. Peak torque, meanwhile, has risen by 70 Nm (52 lb-ft) to 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). To ensure exceptionally sharp turbocharger response and uninterrupted power development, the new unit's high-pressure and low-pressure stages both feature variable turbine geometry. The new BMW M440d xDrive Convertible requires just 5.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest. Despite its sporting instincts, the engine burns an average of only 6.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (44.8 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 165 grams per kilometre (predicted figures based on the WLTP test cycle) respectively.
Eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, brand-new Sprint function for unleashing maximum performance in an instant
This is the first time that all model variants in the BMW 4-Series Convertible range have been fitted with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The latest version of the automatic transmission goes about its task of relaying the drive torque from the engine with even sharper shift characteristics and still greater efficiency. The gear ratio spread has been widened, too, making it possible to achieve significant efficiency gains with reduced engine speeds, particularly when driving in higher gears. The transmission's control unit is additionally able to take into account data on route topography and traffic situation supplied by the navigation system and driver assistance systems. This makes it possible, for example, to shift down early when approaching a junction or a vehicle ahead.
The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission offers even sportier shift characteristics, faster gear changes and the benefit of shift paddles on the steering wheel. Noticeable extra dynamism is provided both by the Launch Control feature and the brand-new Sprint function, which facilitates particularly rapid bursts of speed. Pulling on the left shift paddle for at least a second engages the Driving Experience Control switch's SPORT settings for the accelerator response, engine note and gearshift characteristics. At the same time, the transmission will drop straight into the lowest possible gear for maximum acceleration. SPORT mode displays appear in the instrument cluster and the word SPRINT flashes up. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with Sprint function comes as standard in the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and BMW M440d xDrive Convertible and is included as part of M Sport specification for all other engine variants.

Weight-minimised front and rear axles and lift-related dampers for effortless sporty handling
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is equipped with an extensively upgraded pairing of double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle. This design principle offers an outstanding basis for combining precisely controllable handling - even when the car is being pushed hard - with impressive long-distance comfort. A construction engineered for optimum weight and stiffness combines with the model-specific elastokinematics to ensure precise wheel guidance and increased ride comfort over the outgoing model.
The lift-related dampers have an equally beneficial effect on the handling characteristics of the new 4-Series Convertible. They reduce body movement perceptibly when smoothing out vibrations caused by bumpy road surfaces and dynamic cornering. The system is continuously variable and generates progressive damper force according to the changing spring travel. This prevents excessive body dive and rebound when driving over large bumps and so avoids uncomfortable, nervous damping response. The well-resolved ride clearly gains from the progressive damping when driving over smaller imperfections, too.
This system adds extra hydraulic damping at the front axle and a compression-limiting system at the rear. At the front, the first line of defence against body vibrations is an additional element that drops down into the inner sleeve of the damper. Only when greater loads are encountered does the entire damper become active. The rear dampers also adapt continuously to the driving situation. The varying wall thicknesses of the front dampers, the tubular anti-roll bars and the lightweight pendulum supports serve to bring about a reduction in unsprung masses that improves the system's responses.
Lift-related damping is an active element of the suspension set-up. Its tuning optimises the balance between sportiness and comfort. Increased damping forces and firmer springs and anti-roll bars compared to the new BMW 3-Series Sedan result in bespoke handling characteristics while also lowering ride height by ten millimetres. The optional M Sport suspension (standard on the new BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and BMW M440d xDrive Convertible) includes even stiffer settings for the lift-related damping and springs.
Adaptive M suspension spans an extremely wide spectrum between sportiness and comfort
The adaptive M suspension available as an option offers the widest possible range of driving experiences, from seriously sporty through to extremely comfortable. Its electronically controlled dampers serve to enhance not just agility and body stability, but also the car's long-distance capabilities. Continuously adjustable valves allow the damping force to be metered at each wheel individually and as a function of vehicle load. Switching between the various Driving Experience Control switch modes produces a clearly perceptible variation in the damping characteristics - from the well-balanced long-distance comfort of COMFORT through to the highly dynamic set-up activated in SPORT.
An extra mode can be selected using the Driving Experience Control switch on models with adaptive M suspension. In the ADAPTIVE setting, the steering, damping and accelerator responses along with the Steptronic transmission's shift characteristics are automatically adjusted to suit the driving style. The control system responds to accelerator and steering inputs and the position of the selector lever to switch the powertrain and suspension to a sportier or more comfortable response. Navigation data can also be used to prepare the car in advance for an upcoming junction or bend.
Variable sport steering offering greater precision
Model-specific revisions to the steering systems for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible provide exceptional precision. Electric Power Steering with Servotronic is fitted as standard. Variable sport steering is part of the M Sport suspension and adaptive M suspension set-ups. With its variable ratio, which adjusts to changes in the steering angle, it is equally adept at keeping the car effortlessly in a straight line, maximising cornering agility and turning/manoeuvring with ease. M Sport brakes with blue or red brake callipers

In addition to Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), comprising the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and numerous other functions, standard specification also includes Performance Control. The DSC system is used to precisely limit rotational speed equalisation between the rear wheels, optimising the transfer of power to the road. Engine power which cannot be transferred to the road by the unloaded wheel on the inside of the bend - as it is liable to slip - is deliberately shifted to the wheel on the outside of the bend, rather than applying the brakes to neutralise its effect. The standard equipment roster for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible includes the latest leather sports steering wheel, with thumb rests and electroplated applications that add to both the sporty driving experience and the interior's elegant flair. There is also the option of an M leather steering wheel and a BMW Individual leather item. Distinctive decorative stitching runs horizontally along the instrument panel with optional Sensatec trim. A leather-covered BMW Individual instrument panel is also on the options list, alongside other highly exclusive items including three different BMW Individual interior trim strip designs and BMW Individual door sill plates.
Front sports seats as standard, individual-style rear seats
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible comes with newly developed sports seats in the front as standard. Their boldly contoured side bolsters give the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support when taking corners at speed. Electric seat adjustment including memory function is another standard feature, while the seats fitted in the M Sport model additionally allow their occupants to adjust the backrest width and seat cushion angle to their liking. Standard Vernasca leather trim comes in a choice of five colours and includes smart decorative quilting and seam patterns. Extended BMW Individual Merino leather trim and BMW Individual full leather trim will also become available for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible at a later date.
An Easy Entry function facilitates entry into and exit from the rear compartment. The specially designed rear bench incorporates two individual-style seats, further underlining the sporty nature of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. The ISOFIX bars are now positioned further to either side, making the task of securing child seats far easier. The requisite attachment points have been incorporated into the domes behind the head restraints.
Optimised functionality for both everyday journeys and longer trips
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is equipped as standard with a storage package for enhanced functionality both in everyday driving and when travelling longer distances. This adds features such as extra storage compartments, partition nets on both sides of the boot lining, securing lugs and bag hooks in the boot. A trailer coupling that extends and retracts again electrically can be specified as an option for the new 4-Series Convertible, which has a maximum trailer load of up to 1,800 kilograms, depending on the model variant.
The stowage trays and storage compartments around the front seats and in the rear now also accommodate significantly more than in the outgoing model. As well as the traditional glove compartment and the storage space under the centre armrest, there is also a stowage tray in front of the gearshift / selector lever, roomy door pockets and an additional storage compartment underneath the control panel for the lighting functions on the driver's side. The cover at the front of the centre console opens with a fingertip push to reveal two cupholders, a 12V socket and a USB port. A second USB port can be found in the illuminated storage compartment under the centre armrest, and standard specification also includes a hands-free phone system and Bluetooth interface. The telephony with wireless charging option enables inductive charging of compatible smartphones.
The new BMW 4-Series Convertible is fitted with a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation as standard, and innovative wiper arms with integral spray nozzles are used to clean its windscreen.
Three-zone automatic climate control as standard, neck warmers as an option
A number of bespoke measures have been implemented in the area of the intake system, engine cover and underbody to dampen the noise from the engine and thereby increase acoustic comfort in the new BMW 4-Series Convertible when driving with the top down. Measures to divert wind noise effectively around the body further enhance comfort levels. Acoustic glass for the windscreen is part of standard specification for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible.
The acoustic properties of the air conditioning system have also been usefully improved by reducing airflow noise. A three-zone automatic climate control system allowing independent control of the temperature and ventilation settings for the driver's side, the front passenger side and the rear passenger compartment is fitted as standard.
In addition to the wind deflector - which can be fitted quickly and easily - customers can also opt for neck warmers to ensure the enjoyment of open-top driving is diluted as little as possible by the weather conditions. The air outlets integrated into the front head restraints provide a pleasant warming effect when driving with the roof down. The intensity of the flow of warm air can be adjusted using a button in the centre console's control panel, with a choice of three levels. The airflow also adapts to the changing road speed.
And to ensure that passengers find a snug interior awaiting them even in the depths of winter, the new BMW 4-Series Convertible can also be ordered ex-factory with an optional auxiliary heating system. This is activated through the iDrive operating system, using the optional BMW Display Key or by smartphone via the My BMW app.
Lighting mood and sound experience with an exclusive air
The standard LED lighting for the cabin of the new BMW 4-Series Convertible includes the reading and interior lights, as well as the lighting for the glove compartment, the storage compartment under the centre armrest, the footwells, the mirrors in the sun visors and the boot, plus the courtesy lights in the doors. The BMW Live Cockpit Plus fitted as standard in the new BMW 4-Series Convertible includes an audio system with six speakers and output of 100 watts. Standard equipment also includes a DAB+-enabled tuner for receiving digital radio stations. All aerials are integrated into the boot lid, out of sight. Opting for the hi-fi speaker system increases the number of sound sources to ten and the amplifier's output to 205 watts. And for those looking for the ultimate feast for the ears, there is the Harman Kardon surround sound system, complete with 12 speakers and a digital seven-channel amplifier delivering 365 watts of audio power.
Deft touches exude unbridled dynamism: M Sport package Pro and model-specific M Performance Parts
In the same way that driving comfort and functionality increase another notch in the new BMW 4-Series Convertible, model-specific options are also available for sharpening its dynamic edge. These advances filter through into a far wider variety of driver assistance systems than its predecessor could offer. The driver assistance systems available for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible process camera images and the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings, warn of potential hazards and minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. Front collision warning, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning now standard
The new driver assistance features are accompanied by a revised arrangement of controls on the multifunction steering wheel and improved readouts in the instrument cluster. Front collision warning is one of the additions to standard specification for the new BMW 4-Series Convertible. Carefully judged assistance on long journeys: Driving Assistant and Active Cruise Control
The components of the optional Driving Assistant significantly enhance comfort and safety when travelling long distances. The camera- and radar-based system includes Lane Change Warning, which alerts the driver to the presence of a vehicle approaching from behind between 20 km/h (12 mph) and the car's top speed, and helps them guide the new BMW 4-Series Convertible back into the original lane with a steering input. The Driving Assistant package also features rear collision warning and rear crossing traffic warning.
Cruise control with braking function comes as standard in the new BMW 4-Series Convertible, allowing it to stick to a speed selected by the driver. The optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function goes further still, as it is also capable of keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead - with a choice of four proximity settings - as well as braking the new 4-Series Convertible to a halt if necessary and setting off again automatically after brief stops of up to three seconds. The latest version of the system adapts to the changing traffic situation and environmental factors by adjusting the proximity within the selected setting.
Optimised and comprehensive comfort and safety package: the Driving Assistant Professional
The Driving Assistant Professional is a complete package of measures designed to enhance comfort and safety. As such, it embodies the latest progress towards automated driving. The standout feature is the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, which can be used at speeds up to 210 km/h (130 mph). This system takes its bearings from road markings and vehicles driving ahead courtesy of the data from a trifocal camera and a front range radar, enabling it to work with the driver to help centre the vehicle in the detected lane with corrective steering inputs. This also proves to be an effective aid in situations where the lane narrows, as is the case when driving through motorway roadworks.
