Signature BMW driving pleasure and sporting elegance brought together with modern functionality: The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is poised to build on the success of its predecessor with this blend of qualities plus well-conceived enhancements to its inherent attributes and product substance. Like its freshly updated BMW 4-Series siblings, the third body variant in the range also makes its mark with notably improved driving dynamics, sharper looks following the brand's new design language, a refined premium ambience in the cabin and a wide array of innovations in the areas of control/operation and connectivity. Four doors, five full-size seats, a large, wide-opening tailgate and a versatile luggage compartment also help to ensure the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé retains its characteristic strengths in both everyday driving and on longer trips.

This concept of a four-door coupé for the premium midsize segment has seen the compelling blend of elegantly sporty design and hallmark BMW driving pleasure win over new customers. In fact, the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé has become a true ambassador of these traditional BMW qualities, establishing itself - in the space of a single model generation - among the three models making the greatest contribution to brand image. The new edition of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé will be built at BMW Group Plant Munich together with the all-electric BMW i4. Assembly of both at the company's home plant will be almost entirely integrated into the manufacturing process developed for the BMW 3-Series Sedan and BMW 3-Series Touring models. The market launch of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé will get underway in November 2021.

The second generation of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé takes on an even more autonomous identity. It is based on the technical underpinnings of the new BMW 4-Series Coupé. A far broader set of characteristics now distinguishes it from the BMW 3-Series range compared with the outgoing model, in terms not only of design, but also dynamic performance. The car's aerodynamics and the rigidity of the body and chassis mountings have undergone rigorous optimisation, while bespoke tuning of the chassis technology promises a sporty and emotionally rich driving experience.

Distinctive proportions, highly versatile interior

The standalone character of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is rounded off by the modern functionality of its overall concept. Measuring 4,783 millimetres in exterior length, 1,852 millimetres in width and 1,442 millimetres in height, it has dynamic coupé proportions. It is 143 millimetres longer, 27 millimetres wider and 53 millimetres taller than its predecessor, while the track widths have also grown - to 1,595 millimetres at the front (+50 mm) and 1,623 millimetres at the rear (+29 mm). This is also an increase on the track widths of the new BMW 3-Series Sedan of 6 and 19 millimetres respectively. The wheelbase of 2,856 millimetres is 46 millimetres longer than the predecessor's and 5 millimetres more than the figure for the 3-Series Sedan.

The standalone Gran Coupé body concept results in a versatile interior offering generous amounts of space in the rear, where occupants will find three full-size seats awaiting them and considerably more legroom and headroom than in both the outgoing model and the new BMW 4-Series Coupé. The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé offers 470 litres of boot space, the primary capacity in the directly viewable area of the boot having grown by 39 litres. Load space can be expanded to a maximum of 1,290 litres by folding down the sections of the rear backrest, with its standard 40 : 20 : 40 split.

Optimised aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight design increase agility, efficiency and passive safety

The concept for the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé body also includes measures for optimising its aerodynamic properties that have a beneficial effect on both driving dynamics and efficiency. An active air flap control system comprising flaps at the top and bottom, air curtains, streamlined light-alloy wheels and an almost completely sealed underbody serve to channel the airflow effectively. The drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26 measured for the BMW 420d Gran Coupé, for example, represents a reduction of 0.02 over its predecessor.

The weight-minimising design of the body and chassis likewise plays a part in making the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé both more agile and efficient. An intelligent mix of materials helps to lower vehicle weight and combines with optimised load paths to enhance the body's rigidity and crash safety. The hot-stamped steels and aluminium alloys used for the safety passenger cell are supplemented by multi-phase steels for extra reinforcement.

The front end of the car uses an engine side member made from extruded aluminium profiles and die-cast aluminium spring struts. Other advances over the outgoing model have been achieved through the aluminium construction of the bonnet and front side panels of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé.

A comprehensive passive safety concept maximises occupant protection in an extremely wide range of collisions and factors in the requirements of crash testing procedures in car markets around the world. Besides the extremely rigid passenger cell and highly resilient load-bearing structures, it also includes integrated safety electronics which deploy the restraint systems in the right sequence, at the optimum moment and with the required effect for the specific collision type and severity. The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is also equipped as standard with an active bonnet system to optimise pedestrian protection. Pyrotechnic actuators raise the bonnet if the vehicle collides with a pedestrian, creating more deformation space between the bonnet and the hard underlying structures.


The latest-generation models in the BMW 4-Series range stand out as premium midsize vehicles with distinct characters all of their own. Their even greater dynamic prowess and exclusive aura are the fruit of measures to sharpen their profile and clearly distinguish them from the BMW 3-Series Sedan that served as the technological blueprint. Like its siblings, the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé proudly proclaims this individual positioning with its exterior design. Its dynamically stretched silhouette, four doors, distinctive proportions, flowing roofline and the clean-cut, reduced surface design in the new BMW styling language exude coupé-style elegance, supreme sporting flair and an air of functionality specific to this model.

Moving inside the new 4-Series Gran Coupé, these harmoniously combined qualities are brought to the fore most notably by the driver-centric cockpit design and the impressive spaciousness in the rear. The five seats - with standard folding head restraints in the rear - feed into a premium ambience brimming with elegance and modernity, one whose high-quality materials and precision workmanship represent a convincing proposition.

Expressive front end radiates assured presence

Bold lines and surfaces with a three-dimensional structure are the defining elements of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé's expressive front end. Dropping deep down at its centre is the large and vertically prominent BMW kidney grille that transmits a feeling of assured presence. Its air intakes with their mesh design indicate the quantity of cooling air required by the powerful engine behind the scenes. The likewise vertical intakes for the air curtains at the outer edges of the front apron accentuate the car's width.

Like the bonnet's character lines, the contours of the extremely slim headlights zero in on the kidney grille. The side-by-side arrangement of their light sources creates the focused gaze on the road that has become a signature design cue of the BMW brand. The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé comes as standard with full-LED headlights whose sophisticated lighting technology is visible in detail. This includes two slender, U-shaped fibre-optic light guides that serve as the daytime driving lights. There is also the option of Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight including BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant. This equipment item also comes with the cornering light and adaptive cornering functions with variable road illumination optimised for urban and motorway driving. At speeds above 60 km/h (37 mph), BMW Laserlight increases high-beam range to more than 500 metres and follows the course of the road dynamically. Three-dimensional hexagonal fibre-optic light guides supply the daytime driving lights. M lights Shadow Line can be specified for both headlight variants, bringing darkened inlays to their upper edges.

Graceful, sporty silhouette, powerful rear

Smoothly sculpted surfaces structured by crisp lines, doors with frameless windows, powerful shoulders in the rear wheel arch area and a side window graphic stretching deep into the rear end combine to produce a graceful, sporty look when the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is viewed from the side. The flush-fitting door handles have a streamlined design, while the roofline terminates in a pronounced spoiler lip on the tailgate.

Horizontal lines accentuating the car's width are the dominant influence at the rear end. It is an effect reinforced by both the slim and stylishly darkened full-LED rear lights extending well into the flanks and the vertical aero lips at the rear apron's outer edges. The Black finish for the lower areas of the side skirts and rear apron has the effect of giving the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé a very low-slung, powerful stance on the road.

The exterior paintwork can be ordered in a choice of two non-metallic colours and seven metallic shades. Particularly high-end BMW Individual paint finishes are also available.

Specific design features give the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé eye-catching looks which clearly reference its overtly sporting character. The front apron has the signature U-shaped graphic of BMW M models. The BMW kidney grille surround and the vertical trim around the air curtains come in Cerium Grey, as do the exterior mirror caps, tailpipe finishers and model badges, while the air breathers, the side sill trim strips and lower rear bumper trim including the side trim elements are painted in High-gloss Black. An M-specific spoiler on the tailgate rounds off the distinctive, performance-oriented appearance of the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé.

The M Sport trim available as an option for all other model variants also sends a clear message about the car's dynamic ability. Among the elements at work here are the powerfully sculpted front apron and the rear bumper trim and side trim elements in Dark Shadow. An M Carbon exterior package can be specified as an option for the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and on models in M Sport trim. This comprises side air intake trim at the front end, exterior mirror caps, a diffuser element in the rear apron and a specially formed rear spoiler in ultra-lightweight, high-tech carbon fibre.

Interior: driving pleasure and spaciousness; BMW M model and M Sport model have aura of exclusivity

The interior design is geared squarely towards providing a richly involving driving experience in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé. The high centre console and flowing surface structure running from the instrument panel into the door panels generate a cocooning feel in the front seats. In the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and M Sport cars, soft, raised knee pads on the centre console further accentuate the car's engaging driving character.

The Start/Stop button for the engine is positioned in a classily designed control panel in the centre console, which also houses the BMW Controller and the buttons for the Driving Experience Control unit and electromechanical parking brake alongside the model-specific gearshift lever. The exclusive trim for the front door panels features in the rear, too, where three full-size seats offer excellent levels of space, folding head restraints, a folding centre armrest and attachments for securing up to three child seats. Interior trim strips in High-gloss Black come as standard. A selection of other interior trim strips - including fine wood options and suitably high-end items from BMW Individual - can be specified as an option.

A particularly exclusive aura pervades the cabin of the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and models with M Sport trim. Sports seats with M-specific upholstery, an M leather steering wheel, door sill plates bearing the M logo, an Anthracite-coloured M headliner and M interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon lend visual power to the dynamic driving experience.

Drive systems, transmissions and BMW xDrive

The engines fitted in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé are all members of the current Efficient Dynamics family, the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and the introduction of mild hybrid technology with a 48V starter-generator bringing notably more verve and efficiency than its predecessor.

Spearheading the model range is the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé, which has an immensely powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine under its bonnet. The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé will also be available with a choice of two four-cylinder petrol units and a four-cylinder diesel from launch. The exhaust gas aftertreatment technology has also been improved, as a result of which all model variants comply with the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Six-cylinder in-line petrol engine for scintillating performance in the range-topping BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé

The trio of petrol engines available for the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé feature a twin-scroll turbocharger, a High Precision Injection system whose maximum pressure has been upped from 200 to 350 bar, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, along with cooling and oil supply systems that are now more efficient. Petrol particulate filters have been added to improve their system of emission control.

The six-cylinder in-line unit powering the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé was developed with the race track expertise of BMW M GmbH and comes with weight-optimised pistons and con rods as well as a twin-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling. It generates maximum output of 275 kW/374 hp from its 3.0-litre displacement with torque peaking at 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). The resulting flow of muscle power enables the car to race from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds. These bursts of speed are accompanied by the distinctive sound produced by the standard M Sport exhaust system. The BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé posts combined fuel consumption as calculated in the WLTP test cycle of 8.5 - 8.0 l/100 km (33.2 - 35.3 mpg imp), equating to CO2 figures of 193 - 181 grams per kilometre.

Free-revving and efficient four-cylinder petrol engines in the BMW 430i Gran Coupé and BMW 420i Gran Coupé

Upgraded BMW TwinPower Turbo technology has also enhanced the performance characteristics of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines. The more powerful of the duo has an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head for the first time, resulting in extremely effective exhaust cooling for even cleaner emissions. It generates maximum output of 180 kW/245 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), enabling the new BMW 430i Gran Coupé to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 6.2 seconds. The engine's optimised efficiency levels result in combined fuel consumption of 7.6 - 6.8 l/100 km (37.2 - 41.5 mpg imp) and emissions figures of 173 - 156 grams per kilometre in the WLTP cycle.

The four-cylinder engine in the new BMW 420i Gran Coupé is another shining example of efficiency and the free-revving performance associated with BMW power units. Its maximum output of 135 kW/184 hp and peak torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) translate into a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 7.9 seconds. Average WLTP fuel consumption comes in at 7.3 - 6.6 l/100 km (38.7 - 42.8 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 166 - 150 grams per kilometre.

Four-cylinder diesel engine with two-stage turbocharging in the BMW 420d Gran Coupé and BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé

Two-stage turbocharging and updated common-rail direct injection technology endow the 2.0-litre diesel unit in the BMW 420d Gran Coupé and BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé with superior pulling power and efficiency. The engine produces output of 140 kW/190 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). The instantaneous flow of power results in 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint times of 7.3 seconds for the new BMW 420d Gran Coupé and 7.6 seconds for the new BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé. The two models post combined fuel consumption and CO2 figures in the WLTP test cycle of 5.4 - 4.8 l/100 km (52.3 - 58.9 mpg imp) and 141 - 126 grams per kilometre (BMW 420d Gran Coupé) and 5.7 - 5.1 l/100 km (49.6 - 55.4 mpg imp) and 150 - 133 grams per kilometre (BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé).

Mild hybrid technology optimises efficiency and dynamism

Mild hybrid technology has been included with the straight-six petrol engine as well as the diesel unit to sharpen power delivery and optimise efficiency. Here, a 48V starter-generator acts likes an electric drive unit that assists the engine, allowing it to operate within an efficiency-optimised load range as frequently as possible. It also offers the driver an electric boost effect that can instantly put an extra 8 kW/11 hp on tap to give the power unit even sharper response when accelerating off the line or putting in a quick burst of speed.

All the engines available for the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé team up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The latest version of the automatic transmission stands out with its sharper shift characteristics, improved efficiency, remarkably fast gear changes and very smooth operation. In order to optimise the shift strategy for sporty performance and efficiency, the transmission's control unit is able to take into account data on route topography and the traffic situation supplied by the navigation system and driver assistance systems. This makes it possible, for example, to shift down early when approaching a junction or a vehicle ahead.

The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission fitted as standard in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and offered as an option for all other model variants adds shift paddles on the steering wheel. But its standout feature is the Sprint function specialising in dramatic bursts of mid-range acceleration. This involves triggering various actions when the driver pulls on the left shift paddle for at least a second. These include automatically dropping into the lowest possible gear and switching all the powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest setting.

BMW xDrive: precise transfer of power increases agility

BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive takes traction, directional stability and agility to even greater heights. The system is fitted as standard in the range-topping model and is available for the four-cylinder diesel models as an alternative to classical rear-wheel drive. Drive torque is split between the front and rear wheels as required courtesy of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case interlinked with the powertrain and chassis systems.

The latest version of the BMW xDrive system goes about its task of controlling power transmission in an exceptionally efficient manner. In both the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and new BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé, the rear-biased set-up produces the driving experience expected of a BMW in extremely dynamic situations.

Chassis technology

The driving experience in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is shaped by the car's agile handling and precise steering on the one hand and its impressive ride comfort in everyday use and over longer trips on the other. The body's high rigidity combines with specially tuned chassis technology that has been purpose-developed for the models in the new BMW 4-Series range to provide the ideal basis for the car's sporting character. The optimised aerodynamics, wide tracks, perfectly balanced 50 : 50 weight distribution, low centre of gravity and the integrated application of all powertrain and chassis components also do their bit to endow the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé with sublime dynamic performance.

Torsional stiffness at the front end is increased by a shear panel for connecting the front spring strut towers to the bulkhead as well as integral tower-to-front end struts. Underfloor bracing elements increase stiffness in the rear axle area, resulting in improved straight-line stability and greater poise under high lateral acceleration. The two-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle have likewise been engineered to reduce weight while increasing rigidity. Their design principle is a key factor - alongside the lift-related dampers - in the car's blend of precisely controllable handling in dynamic driving situations and excellent comfort on long journeys.

Lift-related dampers with bespoke characteristics

Lift-related dampers are fitted as standard on the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé. Depending on the spring travel, these provide extra damping to control body movement when driving over large bumps, as well as preventing excessive dive. The system reacts to minor imperfections in the road surface with low damping forces that produce high levels of comfort. The extra damping contributes to excellent transient behaviour in corners, too.

At the front axle, an additional element that drops down into the inner sleeve of the damper cancels out body vibrations. The lift-related control at the rear axle employs an additional piston and a tapered inner tube to ensure optimum hydraulic damping even when carrying a heavy load. Lift-related damping is an active element of the suspension set-up and can be tuned specifically to optimise the balance between sportiness and comfort. The optional M Sport suspension (the basis for the specially tuned suspension fitted as standard in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé) includes stiffer settings for the lift-related damping and springs.

Adaptive M suspension spans an extremely wide spectrum between sportiness and comfort

The Adaptive M suspension available as an option offers the widest possible range of driving experiences, from sporty through to comfortable. This combines the characteristics of M Sport suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Continuously adjustable valves allow the damping force to be metered at each wheel individually and as a function of vehicle load. Switching between the various Driving Experience Control switch modes produces a clearly perceptible variation in the damping characteristics - from the well-balanced long-distance comfort of COMFORT mode through to the highly dynamic set-up activated in SPORT.

An extra mode can be selected using the Driving Experience Control switch on models with adaptive M suspension. In the ADAPTIVE setting, the steering, damping and accelerator responses along with the transmission's shift characteristics are automatically adjusted to suit the driving style. Navigation data can also be used to prepare the car in advance for an upcoming junction or bend.

Variable sport steering enhances agility and comfort

The model-specific adaptation of the steering systems for the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé makes them exceptionally precise. Electric Power Steering including Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance is fitted as standard. Variable sport steering is part of the M Sport suspension and Adaptive M suspension set-ups. With its variable ratio, which adjusts to changes in the steering angle, it is equally adept at keeping the car effortlessly in a straight line, maximising cornering agility and turning/manoeuvring with ease.

The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé rides as standard on 17-inch light-alloy wheels. The BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé comes with 18-inch M light-alloy wheels, which are also included in M Sport specification. Further 18- to 20-inch light-alloy wheel variants can be found on the options list. A number of the wheel rims are shod with mixed-size tyres, and there is also the option of high-performance tyres.

M Sport brakes with customised set-up

Powerful lightweight braking systems with a bespoke configuration also play a part in the car's precisely controllable performance. The optional M Sport brakes (standard on the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé) provide excellent braking performance and intuitive feel, whether negotiating city streets or pushing hard around a circuit. They feature a different hydraulic configuration with four-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear.

The functions provided by the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system include not only anti-lock braking (ABS) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), but also a variety of stabilising functions and the drive-off assistant. The Performance Control function gives the car even more agile handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the rear wheels according to the situation at hand. In order to optimise directional stability during heavy braking on surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the right-hand and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse is applied to help the driver correct the car's line. The functioning of the electromechanical parking brake is also integrated into the rear brake callipers by means of the DSC system.

M Sport differential optimises directional stability and cornering dynamics

Traction and directional stability are further improved with the M Sport differential, as are agility and cornering dynamics. The electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear differential forms part of the standard specification for the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and is available as an option for the new BMW 430i Gran Coupé if M Sport suspension or adaptive M suspension is specified.

The DSC system is used to limit rotational speed equalisation between the rear wheels, optimising the transfer of power to the road. This effectively counters any tendency to understeer when taking corners at speed. Power which cannot be transferred to the road by the unloaded wheel on the inside of the bend - as it is liable to slip - is deliberately shifted to the wheel on the outside of the bend, rather than applying the brakes to neutralise its effect. As a result, all of the engine's power is channelled into providing a sporty driving experience. The increase in drive torque finding its way onto the road also allows the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé to accelerate out of corners with eye-catching dynamism. The carefully calculated distribution of drive power endows the car with greater poise when negotiating a quick succession of bends and optimises directional stability when changing lanes at the same time as braking. Another advantage of the M Sport differential is improved traction when pulling away on surfaces with varying grip levels.

Interior and equipment

The generously sized, versatile space inside the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé creates the ideal environment in which to enjoy sporty driving pleasure on everyday journeys and over longer trips. Five full-size seats and a flexibly expandable load compartment underline the functional qualities of the four-door coupé, while the driver-focused cockpit design, high centre console with clearly structured control panel and sporty, cocooned seating position for the driver and front passenger fuel the richly engaging driving experience. The high-quality materials and precision workmanship feed into the modern premium ambience, as does the fully digital screen grouping formed by the instrument cluster and control display.

High-quality options can be selected to accentuate the individual style of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé or increase comfort levels over long-distance journeys. The car's dynamic character can also be brought even further to the fore in a variety of ways: M Sport trim can be ordered as an alternative to standard specification, and there is also the option of the M Sport package Pro and model-specific M Performance Parts.

Five seats offering increased comfort

The flush-fitting control unit in the front section of the roof and new arrangement of the displays optimise the impression of space. Headroom in particular has increased in the front of the cabin, while passengers in the rear enjoy significantly more legroom and knee room. Isofix attachments situated at the outer edges of the rear seats, meanwhile, make it easier to fix child seats in place.

The new-generation sport seats fitted as standard provide optimal support for the driver and front passenger through dynamically taken corners, while electric adjustment including a memory function can be added as an option (standard in the BMW M440i Gran Coupé). Heated front and rear seats can also be specified, as can active seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger. M Sport seats with integral head restraints and wide-ranging electrical adjustment are optionally available for the new BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and models with M Sport trim. Seat surfaces in Sensatec perforated and Vernasca leather upholstery (available in five colour variants) are offered as alternatives to the standard cloth/Sensatec combination. Extended BMW Individual Merino leather trim and BMW Individual Merino full leather trim will also be available from spring 2022.

The standard Sport leather steering wheel comes with particularly high-quality multifunction buttons in its latest version. An M leather steering wheel, a BMW Individual leather steering wheel and steering wheel heating all feature on the options list. The optional Sensatec instrument panel has eye-catching, horizontal decorative stitching, while the leather-covered BMW Individual instrument panel and the BMW Individual interior trim strips offered in three variants add exquisite flourishes.

Model-specific functionality for everyday driving and longer journeys

The large, wide-opening tailgate plays a major role in the model-specific versatility of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé. It comes as standard with an automatic opening and closing mechanism and - if the optional Comfort Access is specified - also features hands-free opening and closing. Practicality in everyday use and on longer journeys is boosted by an array of storage areas, two cup holders under the cover in the front section of the centre console, two USB ports and a Bluetooth interface. The optional telephony with wireless charging enables inductive charging of compatible smartphones.

An electrically extendable and retractable trailer tow hitch is also available as an option. The permissible trailer load is up to 1,800 kilograms, depending on engine variant.

Enhanced acoustic and thermal comfort, glass slide/tilt sunroof with larger transparent surface

The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is fitted as standard with acoustic glazing for the windscreen and three-zone automatic climate control. The optional pre-heating function can be activated through the BMW iDrive operating system or by smartphone via the My BMW App. An automatically dimming rear-view mirror and exterior mirrors that can be electrically adjusted and heated are likewise part of standard specification. An electrically operating folding mechanism for the exterior mirrors can be added as an option.

The new version of the optional glass slide/tilt sunroof has a transparent surface that stretches 102 millimetres further back than in the outgoing model. Its electric drive system allows the moving glass section to either tilt up or slide open.

Personalised light moods and audio experience

The standard LED lighting for the cabin includes reading and interior lights in both the front and rear, as well as lighting for the glove compartment, the storage compartment under the centre armrest, the footwells, the mirrors in the sun visors and the boot, plus the courtesy lights in the doors. The optional ambient lighting provides atmospherically rich illumination of the interior with precisely positioned LED fibre-optic light guides for the contour lines in the instrument panel and the door panelling. The lighting's distribution, brightness and colour scheme can be configured in the iDrive menu. This option also includes the Welcome Light Carpet for the approach to the doors and the Dynamic interior light function, whose pulsating light signals indicate an incoming phone call or an open door when the engine is running.

The BMW Live Cockpit Plus fitted as standard in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé includes an audio system with DAB+ tuner, six speakers and an output of 100 watts. Opting for the hi-fi speaker system increases the number of sound sources to ten and the amplifier's output to 205 watts. And for those looking for the ultimate feast for the ears, there is the Harman Kardon surround sound system included as part of the optional Entertainment package, complete with 16 speakers and a digital seven-channel amplifier delivering 464 watts of audio power.

Effectively enhanced dynamics: M Sport trim, M Sport package Pro and model-specific M Performance Parts

The M Sport trim also adorns the interior with distinctive design and equipment features that emphasise its dynamic character. The performance experience in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé is likewise enhanced by a specific cockpit design. The M Sport package Pro is available for all other model variants as an extension of the M Sport model. Comprising M Sport brakes, 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, M High-gloss Shadow Line with extended features, the M lights Shadow Line and a black M rear spoiler, it delivers optimised driving dynamics and particularly striking looks. A sporty drive sound in the interior, the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, the hi-fi speaker system and M seat belts also increase levels of driving pleasure.

The M Performance Parts available for the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé allow customers to give their car an extra sporting touch, as per their personal tastes. The retrofit items available as part of the Genuine BMW Accessory range include 20-inch M Performance forged light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design with a Jet Black matt finish, a carbon-fibre front grille, front splitter, side skirt attachments and exhaust tailpipe finishers, as well as aero flicks for the front apron in High-gloss Black. And customers can also bring additional sporting flair to the interior with options such as an M Performance steering wheel and interior trim panels in carbon-fibre design.

Driver assistance systems

The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé enhances safety and comfort with a significantly expanded selection of driver assistance systems compared with the predecessor model. Around 40 automated assistance functions - all of which are among the best on the market - are either fitted as standard or included on the options list. They support and relieve stress on the driver in monotonous driving situations, such as in tailbacks, stop-start traffic and parking manoeuvres.

The systems deployed in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé stand out with their wide-ranging functionality and high degree of availability. A network of extremely advanced sensors takes centre stage here. The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. Existing functions can be improved or expanded by means of Remote Software Upgrades, and customers can also use Functions on Demand to select and import a range of functions at a later stage (availability depends on the hardware fitted in the vehicle and the market conditions).

The right speed for every situation - automatically

Among the highlights of the range of assistance functions on hand are the automatic Speed Limit Assist and route monitoring available when using Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. With automatic Speed Limit Assist, the system controls the car's speed by both maintaining the desired safety distance to vehicles travelling in front and observing speed restrictions along the route. It takes into account speed limit signs detected by Speed Limit Assist or by looking ahead along the route using data from the navigation system. If the relevant setting is selected in the BMW iDrive menu, the maximum permitted speed registered in this way is automatically adopted as the new desired speed.

The route monitoring function additionally takes into account the nature of the route at hand. This function uses the navigation system's map to look ahead and reduce the car's speed when approaching a corner, a roundabout, a junction or an exit.

Outstanding: Active Cruise Control reacts to traffic lights automatically

An additional, highly sophisticated function makes the version of Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function included in the Driving Assistant Professional more comfortable to use in urban areas, in particular. If the optional Head-Up Display has been specified, the system is also able (in Germany) to incorporate traffic signals into the functioning of Cruise Control. At a large number of traffic signals, if a red light is detected by the system, this is displayed in the instrument cluster and the car is automatically braked to a standstill - either in the first row of vehicles ahead of the lights or behind a vehicle that is also stopping.

At a more complex intersection - for example, where different traffic light signals apply to different lanes - the driver can confirm a detected and displayed red light with the press of a button on the multifunction steering wheel, and the car then brakes smoothly to a standstill. Regardless of whether Cruise Control is activated, at many traffic lights the drive-off reminder tells the driver when the lights switch to green. The clearance to continue driving is signalled in the instrument cluster and, if required, with an audible alert. This functionality is unique in the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé's segment.

Front-collision warning, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning as standard

The BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is fitted as standard with front-collision warning. This system includes Collision Warning with braking function and pedestrian and cyclist warning with braking function. Also part of standard equipment is Speed Limit Info with no-overtaking indicator.

Lane Departure Warning with lane return is another feature fitted as standard. The system now analyses the road conditions at hand even more precisely. On extremely narrow roads, the course correction assistance is suppressed so that if a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, the driver can easily move onto the side of the road.

Targeted increase in comfort and safety: Driving Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function

The functions included in the optional Driving Assistant include Rear Collision Prevention and rear crossing traffic warning, which reduces the danger of a collision when reversing towards roads which are difficult to see into. Lane Change Warning increases safety in overtaking manoeuvres on multi-lane roads. It alerts the driver to vehicles which are within a critical distance on the adjacent lane or approaching quickly from the rear. The warning takes the form of an illuminating signal in the exterior mirror.

The standard-fitted Cruise Control with brake function helps make driving over longer distances more relaxing. And the optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function offers even more extensive assistance by using sensor data from cameras and radar to not only maintain the preferred speed but also automatically keep a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead - with a choice of four proximity settings. The distance information can be shown in the optional BMW Head-Up Display.

Providing assistance according to the situation at hand: Driving Assistant Professional

Active Cruise Control is available as an individual option, where it can be used at speeds of up to 160 km/h (99 mph). As part of the optional Driving Assistant Professional, it is even available at up to 210 km/h (130 mph). Drivers of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé can also utilise the services of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant to continue along their current course - likewise at up to 210 km/h (130 mph) - with the assistance of smooth correcting steering inputs. Active Navigation is also one of its functions and helps the driver to keep to the route calculated by the navigation system on multi-lane roads.

Further components of Driving Assistant Professional are the Emergency Lane Assistant (can be used in selected European countries), Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection, Emergency Stop Assistant and the Evasion Assistant, which also reacts to pedestrians. Meanwhile, Road Priority Warning, Wrong-way Warning and front crossing traffic warning help to provide active protection from collisions.

Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview of the activated systems and their functionality. To this end, the central area of the cockpit display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of the vehicle and its surroundings. This is where the driver can see an image of the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the cameras and sensors in the driver's current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes.

Help, as desired, with parking and manoeuvring: Reversing Assist Camera, Reversing Assistant, Parking Assistant Plus

Drivers of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé also benefit from effective assistance when parking and manoeuvring, e.g. thanks to the standard Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. In addition, the Reversing Assist Camera is also integrated as standard into the BMW badge on the tailgate. The likewise standard Parking Assistant includes Active Park Distance Control (PDC), which uses visual and acoustic alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles to the sides and rear of the vehicle.

Added to which, the latest version of the Parking Assistant offers an even wider range of uses. It helps the driver to select and use parking spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. And it can also be used for pulling out of spaces parallel to the road. As well as the necessary steering inputs, the Parking Assistant carries out the acceleration, braking and gear changes required for the manoeuvre.

The Reversing Assistant is also an element of the Parking Assistant. It offers the highly convenient option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-storey car parks or entrances to courtyards, over a distance of up to 50 metres. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedal and monitor the vehicle's surroundings.

The functions contained in the optional Parking Assistant Plus provide an excellent overview. Surround View including Top View, Panorama View und 3D View help to create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings, which is shown from various angles in the control display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

The BMW Drive Recorder available on cars with Parking Assistant Plus uses the driver assistance systems' cameras to record video images all around the vehicle, so these can be stored and later either played back on the control display when the vehicle is stationary or exported via the USB interface. It therefore allows the driver to record videos up to 40 seconds in length while driving through spectacular countryside or performing eye-catching driving manoeuvres, for example. In the event of a collision, up to 20 seconds of video taken both before and after the impact (i.e. 40 seconds in total) are stored.

Display and operating system, connectivity

Both driver and passengers will benefit from the enhanced options for intuitive operation and the innovative digital services heralded by the inclusion of BMW Operating System 7 in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé as standard. Individually configurable display content and intelligent connectivity underpin multimodal and remarkably seamless interaction between driver and vehicle. Drivers can take their pick of control interface for the situation at hand: control display touchscreen, proven BMW Controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, voice control or optional BMW gesture control. The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé also gives customers on-board access to a range of highly advanced digital services, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Digital Key, Connected Music und Remote Software Upgrades.

The standard-fitted BMW Live Cockpit Plus comprises the iDrive operating system with 8.8-inch control display and a Touch Controller, a black panel instrument cluster centred around a 5.1-inch colour display, plus a multimedia and navigation system, two USB ports for data transfer and a WiFi interface. A built-in SIM card with 4G LTE connectivity and the likewise standard Connected Package Professional enable the use of digital services such as BMW TeleServices and intelligent emergency call, Real Time Traffic Information including hazard alert and Remote Services via the My BMW App.

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a fully digital screen grouping. It includes a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a 10.25-inch control display. The fully digital instrument display in the cockpit provides enough room to accommodate an excerpt from the navigation map, media content, status indicators for the driver assistance systems or Assisted View (3D visualisation of the surrounding area). Information such as lateral acceleration during high-speed cornering can be displayed here too.

Fast, accurate, informative: the BMW Maps navigation system

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system boasts significantly enhanced performance and excellent accuracy along with a simplified method of destination entry. The new-generation navigation system offers extremely fast route calculation carried out dynamically and based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The arrival time is calculated using an anticipatory method which factors in the usual traffic levels along the entire route. Drivers can enter any word when searching for their chosen destination. The search results are sorted by relevance with a high level of precision. Alternatively, the destination can be entered simply by saying it. Points of interest (POIs) along the route are described in detail, with reviews, opening times and photos all included.

BMW Maps also uses Connected Parking to provide assistance when searching for a parking space close to the destination. When the driver selects their destination in the navigation system, they receive an indication of the parking situation at the destination for their estimated time of arrival. Shortly before arriving, the driver is given information on the nearest multi-storey car park as well as proposed routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. The familiar On-Street Parking Information and ParkNow services have been intelligently incorporated into the functionality of BMW Maps.

Smartphone linking and integration of third-party services

BMW Live Cockpit Plus - like BMW Live Cockpit Professional - comprises optimised smartphone integration, e.g. via Apple CarPlay, allowing customers to access an array of digital services such as the digital voice-controlled assistant Siri, various map apps, music streaming services like Apple Music and the messaging service WhatsApp. The wireless WiFi connection between the smartphone and vehicle enables the operating system in question to be integrated directly into the car's display and operating system. All the key information from the apps made available there can be viewed both in the control display and - in a cleverly presented way - in the instrument cluster or optional Head-Up Display.

The BMW Group has extended the reach of seamless connectivity in its vehicles with the addition of another customer-centric service. Android Auto™ provides a simple, safe way to use smartphone functions such as music, media and messaging apps during a journey. Customers can interact with their smartphone with the help of the Google Assistant and the actions carried out are shown on the car's information display. Highlights of the interplay between Android Auto and BMW include user-friendly and wireless connectivity and the intelligent integration of Google Maps™ navigation instructions in the BMW Head-up Display.

The My BMW App is available in more than 40 countries for both iOS and Android operating systems, and can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. It acts as a new universal interface to the car, providing information on the vehicle's status at any time. Depending on the equipment fitted, it also enables remote operation of functions, such as vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors or monitoring the car's immediate vicinity (Remote 3D View). Functions also include the ability to send destination addresses from the smartphone to the vehicle's navigation system. The My BMW App makes it even easier for customers to log in to any current BMW model with their personal BMW ID. For example, the user information and settings stored in the BMW ID can now also be imported into the vehicle extremely conveniently by scanning a QR code displayed on the central screen.

The deep integration of Amazon Alexa means customers can now use the voice assistant from Amazon in their car in exactly the same way they already do at home. As a result, editing shopping lists, accessing the latest news and playing music are even easier. And users can now also control compatible smart home devices from the car. Amazon Alexa can be installed in the car in just a few steps with the help of the My BMW App.

The optional BMW Digital Key enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé via Near Field Communication (NFC) with their Apple iPhone, making a conventional car key superfluous. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the wireless charging tray. The Digital Key can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can share access with up to five other users, and has the option of creating a configuration for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with extended functions

The latest generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant provides a particularly close connection between driver and car in the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé. Activated by a spoken prompt (for example "Hey BMW") or at the touch of a button, this digital companion acquires new capabilities all the time. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now also be used to adjust the air conditioning. In addition, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also capable of learning routines that increase both convenience and driving pleasure in specific situations. For instance, the driver's window can be opened automatically when the vehicle reaches a chosen location entered using GPS coordinates, such as the entrance to a garage or multi-storey car park.

When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics appear in the control display to emphasise the system's interactive character. The graphic now "turns" towards the speaker, thereby visualising how the system is listening attentively to what is being said. The system recognises whether the driver or front passenger is speaking to it and reacts accordingly by, for example, altering the climate control settings on one side of the interior.

Always up to the minute: Remote Software Upgrades for over-the-air updates

The BMW Group is one of the key players in the field of over-the-air function upgrades. By 2020 it was already carrying out the largest upgrade campaigns of any European carmaker. The Remote Software Upgrades function keeps the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé right up to date with the latest software. The content of the upgrades ranges from new services to improved vehicle functions. All updates can be imported over the air, either on a smartphone via the My BMW App or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card.

The intelligent connectivity technology also makes it possible to incorporate additional vehicle functions at a later date. The optional features that owners can retrofit via this digital channel include the High Beam Assistant, the Drive Recorder and Active Sound Design.
